Periodontics

Periodontics is the branch of science that studies the clinical aspects of supporting structures of teeth (i.e the periodontium), which includes gingiva (gums), alveolar bone (jaw), root cementum and periodonal ligament. This word is derived from two Greek words ‘peri’ means around and ‘odons’ stands for tooth. Exactly taken, it means study of that which is "around the tooth".

A periodontist specializes in treating different kinds of periodontium diseases.

These sorts of diseases span through different forms but are usually a result of bacterial infection in gums. If, left untreated, it generally causes tooth and alveolar bone loss

Range of latest periodontal treatments covers bone grafting and flap surgeries. Both these treatments are perfectly done at our world class dental care facility by our periodomtist Dr Shalini Grover.

Periodontitis

It is a gradually increasing inflammatory disease of gums and the surrounding tissue. It is generally known as gum disease and was recognized as pyorrhea in previous years. It is found that over 80% of the population above the age of 40 years may suffer from this disease with severity varying drastically from one patient to another. Periodontitis is the main cause for tooth loss after crossing the mark of the 40 year of age.

Several medical conditions and medications can also make you more vulnerable to gum disease. This list includes pregnancy, diabetes, epilepsy and medications like chemotherapy, birth control pills, antidepressants and heart problems.

If you notice any of the following symptoms of gum disease, fix an appointment as soon as possible with the periodomtist:

  • Bleeding gums while brushing
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gums which have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Change in the way of teeth fit together while taking a bite
  • A change in the fit of partial dentures

Non-Surgical Therapy

Scaling and Root Planning: Manual removal of plaque and tarter from root surfaces of teeth below the gum line.

Antibiotics: As bacteria cause periodontitis, antibiotics may be given as pills, fibers or in other forms. Fibers are used in association with scaling and root planning. They are fixed directly into the pockets and are removed within the span of 7-10 days. Antibacterial mouth rinses may also be advised to control plaque.Splinting: This treatment joins weak teeth together to make them a stronger single unit, making them more stable to work for comfortable chewing.

Surgical Therapy

Flap Surgery: Our highly qualified periodontist, Dr Anjali Sharma divides gum from teeth creating a "flap" to get the access to infected pocket. It aims to decrease pocket depth and increase the ability to maintain the remnant pockets clean.

Gingivectomy: This treatment is carried out when excess amount of gum growth around teeth happened. It results formation of false pocket and inability to keep them clear and clean.

Osseous (bone) surgery: This methodology is performed to smooth shallow craters and defects in bone due to mild or moderate bone loss.

Guided Tissue Regeneration: This procedure is done in association with surgical flap where gum growth into defected tooth is barriered off allowing gradual growing bone, cementum and ligament cells to populate a bony defect.

Bone Grafts: Tiny remnants of patient's bone, synthetic bone or bone attained from bone bank are used to fill a bony defect around the teeth. These grafts work as a scaffolding on or around which patients own bone is conducted or induced to grow.

Soft Tissue Graft: For problem of gum recession, a graft is usually taken from the palate and transplanted on the receding area to strengthen thin gum and to slow down further gum recession.

Flap and Bone Surgery

When gum is inflamed severely, alveolar bone will be absorbed and defected. Periodontal ligaments which unite alveolar bone and teeth will disappear. Sever bone lose will cause tooth moving and missing. Flap and bone surgery is order to contour the bone, deeply clean the tooth to reduce inflammation and promote bone re-growing and connections firm.
